Copland – Fanfare for the Common Man
Fanfare for the Common Man (1942)
Aaron Copland (1900-1990)
Despite learning composition in France, American composer Aaron Copland developed a musical style that became distinctively American. In 1942, British conductor Eugene Goossens commissioned 18 fanfares for his Cincinnati Orchestra’s concert season so as to promote patriotic sentiment during World War II. Copland’s famous salute to everyman, scored for brass and percussion, is the only one of these fanfares to have stood the test of time.
